What does a sleep study cost without insurance?
What a sleep study is and why a doctor orders one
A sleep study is a test that records what your body does while you sleep. MedlinePlus, the health information site of the National Library of Medicine, says the test is also called polysomnography. A doctor may order one if you have loud snoring or pauses in your breathing at night. Restless sleep or a lot of sleepiness during the day are other reasons. The most common reason is to check for sleep apnea, a problem where breathing stops and starts again during sleep.
The test itself does not treat anything, but it gives a sleep doctor information so that the doctor can decide what is going on and what to do next. This page is general information and not medical advice, and only a doctor can tell you whether you need a sleep study.
What a sleep study costs without insurance
Researchers reported on posted hospital prices in JAMA Network Open in 2021. They looked at the cash price, which is the price for a person who pays without insurance. For a sleep study, the median cash price at 1,087 hospitals was $2,476. The middle half of those hospitals charged between $1,596 and $3,534.70.
A median is the middle price on a list. Half of the hospitals charged less than that and half charged more. The figure is from 2021, so today's prices may be different. It also covers hospitals only, and only those that posted both a cash price and an insurance price. A sleep center that is not part of a hospital may charge more or less.
We did not find a trusted national price for a home sleep test. The price depends on who runs the test and what is included. The sections below show what to ask so that you can compare real quotes.
Home sleep test or lab sleep study
There are two main ways to do a sleep study, and your doctor picks the one that fits your health and your symptoms.
- A lab study is done overnight at a sleep center. The NHLBI is a part of the National Institutes of Health. It says staff attach sensors that record your brain waves, heart rate and breathing, plus your oxygen levels and muscle movements. MedlinePlus adds that a trained technician watches you overnight.
- A home sleep test is done in your own bed with a portable device. MedlinePlus says it usually means wearing a monitor for one night, and sometimes two. It is mainly used when sleep apnea is the main concern.
- MedlinePlus also says that if you have heart or lung disease, your sleep specialist may want you to test at a sleep center instead.
A lab study uses more equipment and a technician all night, so it is likely to cost above a home test. We cannot give you the gap in dollars, since we found no trusted source for it. If your doctor says either test would work, get a price for both.
One good question for your doctor is whether a home test is a safe choice for you. The doctor knows your history, and we do not.
What the price may include
A sleep study bill can have several parts, so it helps to ask what the quote covers and what it leaves out. The first thing to find out is whether the price includes the equipment and the technician, or only one of them. A sleep doctor's reading of the results can arrive as a second bill, so check on that too.
- Ask whether the first visit with the sleep doctor is included or billed separately.
- Find out whether a second night would be added if the first night does not give enough information.
- Check whether a facility fee is added when the test is done at a hospital.
- Ask for the quote in writing, or write down the date and the name of the person you spoke with.
If you schedule the study ahead of time, federal rules may entitle you to a written estimate. The estimate is called a good faith estimate, and you can ask for one when you book. Our guide on asking for the cash price has a phone script that works at a sleep center.
Ways to pay less
Start with the doctor who wants the test. The doctor can tell you which sleep centers they work with and whether a home test is an option. A direct primary care doctor can talk this through and write the order. The doctor charges a flat membership fee, which is usually $50 to $200 a month. A membership is not insurance, so the sleep study is a separate cost. To find one, search for a cash-pay doctor near you.
A community health center is also worth a call. These clinics adjust their fees by income and family size, and they serve everyone even if they cannot pay. We could not confirm that every center can order or run a sleep study, so ask what they do and where they send patients. You can read more in our guide on community health centers.
If a hospital runs the test, find out about its financial assistance policy before you have the study. Nonprofit hospitals must have one, and our guide on hospital financial assistance explains how to apply.
What happens after the study
A sleep doctor reads the results and talks with you about them. NHLBI says a sleep study can show which type of sleep apnea you have and how serious it is. If you are told you have sleep apnea, one common treatment is a breathing machine called CPAP. You can read about its price in our guide on the cost of a CPAP machine without insurance.
Please do not skip a test because of the cost. Talk with the doctor about what the test is for, what a lower-cost option might be and how soon the study should happen. If you have chest pain, trouble breathing while awake or any other emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
Common questions
Is a home sleep test cheaper than a lab sleep study?
A home test uses less equipment and no overnight technician, so it is likely to cost less. We could not find a trusted national price for either a home test or a lab study at a non-hospital center. Each place can give you a written self-pay price if you ask.
Do I need a doctor's order for a sleep study?
Most sleep centers ask for an order from a doctor, and the doctor decides which test fits your symptoms. Call the center first and find out what it needs from you.
Why does the same sleep study cost different amounts?
Hospitals set their own prices, and the 2021 study found a wide spread. Half of the hospitals fell between $1,596 and $3,534.70. A quote also changes with what it includes, such as the reading of the results.
What if I cannot pay for a sleep study?
Start by asking the testing site for a self-pay price, a discount for paying early or a payment plan. A hospital can also tell you about its financial assistance policy. A doctor can explain which choices are safe to compare.
Does a direct primary care membership cover a sleep study?
Most memberships do not cover a sleep study. The membership is not insurance, and it pays for visits with your doctor. Ask the practice what is included before you join.
