Hospital cash prices

District of Columbia hospital cash prices for common tests and scans

The short answerWe read the price files that District of Columbia hospitals must post online and found the cash price for 24 common scans, lab tests, ER visits and EKGs. 7 of 9 District of Columbia hospitals had a file we could open. 5 of the 9 covered hospitals posted a usable cash price for at least one of these services. The tables below name each hospital and the price it posted, with the date of its file.

The prices come from each hospital's own price file. The files in these tables were last updated between April 1, 2026 and September 1, 2026, and we read them on October 16 through 18, 2026.

We count every hospital in District of Columbia that the federal price rule covers. The rule treats federal hospitals, such as VA and military hospitals, as already meeting its terms, so we leave them out.

We chose these prices with version 1.10e of our written rules. Our methods page explains what each version does. Some hospitals post a cash price that is the same as their full list price, and some hospitals share one price file with other hospitals. We say so in the Notes column of the tables. Each hospital's own price file is linked once, in the price files list near the end of this page.

Middle price for each service in District of Columbia

"Middle price" means half of the hospitals that posted a usable cash price were above it and half were below. "Middle half" is the range that holds the middle half of the hospitals. It runs from the price one fourth of the way up to the price three fourths of the way up. We show a middle price when at least 5 hospitals posted a price, and a middle half when at least 10 did. Can't afford these prices? Community health centers near you charge by income. Hospitals that are tax-exempt charities must also have a financial assistance policy. Find low-cost care near you.

Read this before you use these prices

  • This is the price the hospital posted for people who pay cash. It is not a quote. Call the hospital and ask for the price in writing before you go.
  • This is the hospital's part of the bill only. The radiologist, the ER doctor or another doctor usually sends a separate bill.
  • One hospital can post several prices for the same test. Our methods page explains which one we show.
  • Many hospitals, including all nonprofit (501(c)(3)) hospitals, must have a financial assistance policy. You may owe less than the cash price shown, or nothing. Ask for the policy before you pay.
  • A hospital that does not appear in a table did not post a usable cash price for that service, or we could not open its file. That does not mean the service is free.
  • If you are not using insurance, the provider must give you a written cost estimate, called a good faith estimate, when you schedule care at least 3 business days ahead. You can also ask for one before you schedule.
  • In an emergency, go to the nearest emergency room or call 911. Federal law requires hospitals that take Medicare and offer emergency care to check you for an emergency, even if you cannot pay. If you have an emergency, the hospital must treat you until you are stable or move you safely to a hospital that can.
  • We are not connected to these hospitals. The prices come from their own files, and we may make mistakes. If you see one, please tell us through our contact page.

Hospitals whose price file we could not find, open or use

For these hospitals we did not find a price file that we could match to the hospital. In some cases the hospital's website refused our automated download, or we could not read the file. We do not try to get around a block. This is not a finding that a hospital broke the rule. Only the federal government decides that. Another 2 District of Columbia hospitals had a price file we could open. Those files had no usable cash price for these 24 services, so they do not appear in the tables.

  • Howard University Hospital Corp, Washington

This hospital appears to have closed or stopped patient care, so we found no current price file.

  • United Medical Center, Washington

Price files by hospital

Each hospital's own price file is linked here once. The date in each table is the date of that hospital's file. These files can be very large, and some websites may be slow or may have moved the file since we read it.

Financial assistance by hospital

Many hospitals can lower a bill for people with low incomes. We have not yet checked each hospital's own page about financial assistance in this state, so we do not link to any. Ask the hospital billing office about financial assistance before you pay, and read our guide to hospital financial assistance. We are not connected to these hospitals, and nothing here is a promise that you will get help.
