What escitalopram costs if you have no insurance

The short answerMedicaid's national drug cost survey for October 7, 2026 shows pharmacies paid about 3.9 to 6.3 cents per generic escitalopram tablet, by strength. Your price at the counter will be higher, so ask a few pharmacies for the cash price. Please do not stop this medicine on your own, and call or text 988 if you are in crisis.

What pharmacies pay for generic escitalopram

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a federal health agency, runs a national drug cost survey called NADAC. It tracks what pharmacies pay on average to buy a drug. We used it because we could not find a government list of counter prices. The numbers below are for generic escitalopram in the week of October 7, 2026.

  • The 5 mg tablet cost pharmacies about 4.2 cents each.
  • The 10 mg tablet cost about 3.9 cents each.
  • The 20 mg tablet cost about 6.3 cents each.
  • The liquid form, at 5 mg in each 5 milliliters, cost about 14.3 cents per milliliter.

To estimate a total, multiply the price per tablet by the number of tablets on your prescription. A fill of 30 tablets of the 10 mg strength comes to about $1.18 at the survey price. Thirty tablets of the 20 mg strength come to about $1.89. Your doctor picks the strength, so we show these only to explain how low the starting cost is.

The price at the counter is higher than the survey price, because the pharmacy has its own costs to cover. How much higher it is varies from one pharmacy to the next. That is why a phone call is worth making.

The brand-name version costs far more

The same survey lists the brand-name version of this medicine at about $14.74 for a 5 mg tablet. It lists about $15.41 for a 10 mg tablet and $16.09 for a 20 mg tablet. Those are the prices pharmacies pay, and the price you are charged will differ.

The Food and Drug Administration says a generic medicine has the same active ingredient as the brand-name drug. If a prescription was written for the brand, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether the generic is right for you. Switching medicines on your own is not safe, so ask first.

What is escitalopram used for?

MedlinePlus, a health site from the National Library of Medicine, says escitalopram is used to treat depression and generalized anxiety disorder. Generalized anxiety disorder is a long-lasting worry that is hard to control. The medicine belongs to a group called SSRIs, which are antidepressants. MedlinePlus says it comes as a tablet and as a liquid that you take by mouth.

A doctor or another licensed clinician has to prescribe it. This page is general information and not medical advice. Your clinician decides if it is right for you and which strength to use.

How to find a lower cash price

Prices for the same medicine can differ across pharmacies. Write down the details of your prescription, such as the name, strength, form and number of tablets, so every pharmacy quotes the same thing. Then call a few pharmacies and ask for the cash price. What to ask, and how to check mail-order options, is explained in our guide on comparing prescription prices.

A mail-order pharmacy may be a good choice for long-term medicines, according to MedlinePlus. It adds that a 90-day supply may carry a lower copay, which is the set fee an insured patient pays at the counter. For you, the question is whether the cash price drops with a larger fill. Ask your doctor whether a larger fill is right for you before you ask the pharmacy.

Health center pharmacies may buy drugs at reduced prices through a federal program called 340B. The Health Resources and Services Administration says health centers can take part. Its page does not say how much of the savings reaches patients, so ask the health center. Our guide on prescriptions without insurance covers company help programs and other options.

The visits can cost more than the pills

For many people the medicine is the smaller part of the bill. A prescription starts with a visit, and your clinician will want follow-up visits to see how you are doing. If you also see a counselor, those visits add up.

A community health center sets its fees by income, and many offer mental health care. How to find one is explained in our guide on community health centers. For talk therapy, our guide on therapy cost without insurance covers sliding scale therapists and training clinics. A cash-pay doctor with a monthly membership may also cover follow-up visits. Direct primary care usually costs $50 to $200 a month, and you can search for a cash-pay doctor near you.

Please do not stop escitalopram on your own

According to MedlinePlus, you should not stop taking escitalopram without talking to your doctor. Stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal symptoms, and a doctor will probably lower the dose a little at a time. If cost is the problem, call your doctor or pharmacist before you run out. Tell them cost is the reason, and ask what your options are. Please do not skip doses or split tablets to stretch the supply unless your doctor tells you to.

MedlinePlus also says medicines like escitalopram may raise the risk of suicidal thoughts and actions in children, teenagers and young adults under 24. The risk may be higher in the first few months and when the dose goes up. Call your doctor right away about new or worsening depression or thoughts of self-harm.

Call 911 as well if the person has trouble breathing or cannot be awakened. For other overdose questions, MedlinePlus lists the poison control helpline at 1-800-222-1222.
