What sertraline costs if you have no insurance
What is sertraline used for?
Sertraline is a medicine that needs a prescription. MedlinePlus, a health site from the National Library of Medicine, says doctors use it to treat depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is also used for panic attacks, post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder and a severe form of premenstrual symptoms. MedlinePlus says sertraline comes as a tablet and as a liquid concentrate, which you dilute before you take it. A less common capsule form also comes in two higher strengths.
This page is general information and is not medical advice. Your doctor decides whether sertraline is right for you and which strength to use. If you have an emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. If you are thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988, which reaches the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. The call to that line is free and private.
What pharmacies pay for sertraline
For prices, we used a source from the federal government. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a federal health agency, runs a national drug cost survey. The survey is called NADAC, and it tracks what pharmacies pay on average to buy a drug. The numbers below are for generic sertraline in the week of October 7, 2026.
- The 25 mg tablet cost pharmacies about 2.9 cents each.
- The 50 mg tablet cost about 3.5 cents, and the 100 mg tablet cost about 5.1 cents.
- The liquid concentrate cost about 36.5 cents per milliliter.
- The 150 mg capsule cost about $1.25 each, and the 200 mg capsule cost about $1.74 each.
The tablets cost only pennies, and the capsules cost more. In the same survey, brand-name sertraline 50 mg tablets were priced at about $14.91 each. That is a large gap, so it is worth asking your doctor whether the generic is right for you.
To estimate a total, multiply the price per tablet by the number of tablets on your prescription. For example, 30 tablets of the 50 mg strength would come to about $1.04 at the survey price. Your doctor picks the strength, so we list these only to show how low the starting cost is. The counter price will be higher, since the pharmacy has to cover its own costs. We did not find a government list of counter prices, so we do not quote one.
How can you get a fair cash price?
Prices for the same medicine can differ from one pharmacy to the next. Our guide on comparing prescription prices walks you through calling pharmacies, asking about a 90-day supply and checking health center pharmacies.
For sertraline, check which form is on your prescription before you call. The survey shows that the tablets cost pharmacies only pennies, while the 150 mg and 200 mg capsules cost about $1.25 and $1.74 each. If the form you were given seems costly, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether another form could work for you, and do not switch on your own.

The visits cost more than the pills
For many people, the medicine is the smaller part of the cost. Sertraline needs a prescription, and your doctor will want to see you to check how you are doing. Many people also see a counselor while they take the medicine, and those visits add up.
A community health center charges on a sliding scale, which means the price depends on your income. Many health centers offer mental health care, and our guide on community health centers explains how to find one. For talk therapy, read about therapy cost without insurance, which covers sliding scale therapists and training clinics.
A cash-pay doctor may also help with follow-up visits. Direct primary care is a monthly membership that usually costs $50 to $200 a month. Our directory lets you search for a cash-pay doctor near you, and you can ask what is included.
Questions to ask at your visit
A visit goes further when you come with questions. Writing them down first helps, since appointments can feel short.
- Is the generic version right for me, and which strength should I fill?
- How often will I need to be seen, and what does each visit cost me as a self-pay patient?
- Can I get a 90-day supply once my dose is steady, if that is safe for me?
- What should I do if I run out or if the cost changes?
- Which symptoms mean I should call you right away?
Please ask these of your own doctor, because the answers depend on you. A nurse or a pharmacist can also answer many of them. Ask to speak with a social worker or financial counselor about costs if your doctor's office has one.
Please do not stop sertraline on your own
MedlinePlus says not to stop taking sertraline without talking to your doctor. Stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, sweating and dizziness. For that reason, cost problems should go to your doctor or pharmacist first.
If you cannot afford your next fill, call before you run out. Tell the office that cost is the problem, and ask what the options are. A doctor may be able to change the plan safely, and a pharmacist may find a lower price. Please do not skip doses or cut tablets to stretch the supply unless your doctor tells you to.
MedlinePlus also says medicines like sertraline may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and actions in people under 24. The risk is higher in the first few months or when the dose changes. Call your doctor right away about new or worsening depression, or thoughts of self-harm. If you are in crisis, call or text 988.
Plan ahead so you do not run out
A refill request can take a day or more, and an office visit may be needed first. Check your bottle a week or two before it runs out, and call your doctor's office then. Keep a list of your medicine and its strength, and note which pharmacy fills it. Our guide on the cost of a doctor visit without insurance can help you plan if you are between doctors.
Common questions
How much is sertraline without insurance?
Medicaid's national drug cost survey found pharmacies paid about 2.9 to 5.1 cents per tablet in the week of October 7, 2026. The counter price is higher, so call a few pharmacies for their cash prices.
Is generic sertraline as good as the brand?
The FDA says a generic has the same active ingredient as the brand-name drug. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about switching.
Do I need a prescription for sertraline?
Yes, it needs a prescription from a licensed clinician. If you have no insurance, you can pay for the visit yourself, so ask for the visit price first.
What if I cannot afford sertraline this month?
Call your doctor's office or pharmacist before you run out, because they may know a lower price or a program. Please do not stop the medicine without talking to them.
Where can I get help right away if I am in crisis?
Call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, which is free and open all day and night. In an emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
